In Childhood's End author Arthur C. Clarke explores a very interesting possible first contact scenario.
The entire book there are overtones of something bad to come especially since the aliens are referred to as the "Overlords".
And the suspense builds and builds since the overlords are never seen until the very end of the book. Will the ominous tones set throughout the book solidify? or will everything be alright in the end?
